Taxi Zum Klo

Kelly Gorman

Check out this German movie released in 1981. Director Frank Ripploh takes you on an autobiographical journey through pre-AIDS Berlin. Ripploh also takes the lead role in the film, playing an elementary school teacher by day. The film follows him on his sexual escapades, eventually leading him into a relationship with a man named Bernd (who was actually played by Ripploh's boyfriend).

The film is remarkable for a couple different reasons. It depicts sex pretty graphically, but it doesn't necessarily try to evoke any reaction to it. It fits in naturally within the context of the film. It also depicts the relationship between Ripploh and Bernd as relatively normal. Bernd is more attached, while Ripploh wants to continue to live his promiscuous lifestyle. I don't want to give away too many details of the film, but it is sweet, funny, sad and honest. I'm glad I stumbled upon it on Netflix instant play and you should too.
