A hipster teacher takes style cues from his students

By Jeremy Jankowski

This month, I’ve decided to explore the style of a young New York City teacher. Meet Steve Lynch, one of the first professionals to open the New York Harbor School, a new building on Governor’s Island helping bring life to one of the last desolate areas in the city.

Sporting somewhat of a “double-edged” style, Steve differentiates very much from day to night, professional to social, giving a unique quirk to this bubbly twenty-something.

Working with high school kids presents a fairly difficult challenge in terms of fashion. In order to keep professional and not look boring, Steve plays with different dress clothes, placing his own spin on work attire. Forever in skinny jeans, he normally sports suspenders, a skinny tie and a tight fitting shirt with a leather messenger bag.

For a more toned-down look, yet still keeping up the professionalism, Steve will often sport a polo shirt, buttoned to the top. He likes to pair this look with his vintage Owl-style glasses. This is one of my favorite looks.

Understanding fashion is influenced by one’s surroundings, Steve often draws inspiration from his students for his clothing choices outside the classroom. Loud colors are a signature to most things he wears. You can almost always find a pair of flashy sneakers on him after school lets out. His current favorite is a chrome/silver pair.

By night, Steve can be found in what he dubs his signature “Brooklyn Boy” attire. This outfit is comprised of a tight fitting T-shirt, skinny jeans, 59 Fifty hat and stereo headphones—all things reminiscent of his students’ clothing choices. This look is my favorite because it plays on his personality; the dichotomy between dressing hard and being known as someone who is very fun and playful.
