Personal Style: Greg Potter

How does one musician standout in Williamsburg—perhaps the epicenter of the young art and music scene in New York City? Fluorescent socks, bleached hair and eye shadow. Enter Greg Potter.

By Jeremy Jankowski

Vocalist/pianist Greg Potter's personal style is an eclectic mix of his musical influences. Little traces of Madonna, Mick Jagger and David Bowie can be found within Greg's look.

Skinny jeans were perhaps the best thing to happen to denim in years, which counts double for guys. Greg wears only skinny jeans, from regular to spray-on. The jeans give an edge to anyone’s wardrobe, especially musicians. Normally found in a grey or black pair, he sometimes (when really channeling Bowie) will rock a purple or white pair—with a black shirt, of course, so as to not appear over-done.

Staple performance gear includes a skinny tie (H&M or Forever 21), eye shadow and a button-down shirt (Ben Sherman). Greg likes to play with fun fabrics such as glitter ties or patterned button-downs featuring stars or other gender-bending attributes. His wardrobe signature is a pair of playful, outlandish socks, something often over-looked in one's wardrobe. You can find him in anything from fluorescent colors to argyle prints, but never in plain black or white. It’s little touches like this that define one's style.

Keeping with his rocker-inspired look, Greg wears British inspired shoes by day (Fred Perry), and classic wingtips at night.

Aside from his socks, I absolutely love the little traces of Madonna in Greg's look. Recently he bleached his hair, paying homage to the ultimate pop diva. You can also find vintage Madonna t-shirts and tote bags in Mr. Potter's closet, which he wears out shopping or lounging around.
