M@ty Slick's Roadtrip Playlist

A trip to Colorado inspired M@TY SLICK's latest playlist.

I recently drove across the country to my childhood home in Colorado: through the changing leaves of Pennsylvania, the Big Boys in Ohio and the meth labs explosions all over Iowa. It was an eye opening trip and one that will not soon be forgotten. Why, you ask? Not because of the effortless Grindr hookups. (Trust me, there is nothing more bleak than ending up in Omaha and realized the nearest semi-attractive gay is 22.3 miles away.) No, shockingly, it was because of the music! Through all the ups and downs, the tops and bottoms I conquered on my quest to the Rocky Mountains, I was actually rewarded with a multitude of not only new music, but some very ear-appealing takes on a few old favorites. It would be selfish of me not to share, and if you know anything about me, I just love to give and give and give!

In the words of the late P!nk (I know she isn’t really dead, but she might as well be), “Let’s get this party started!”

“We Are Golden” (Calvin Harris Radio Edit)

Mika

Here is my recipe for a great dance floor jam: One part flaming homosexual “bisexual,” one part Scottish “King of Electropop,” Calvin Harris, a pinch of over-emphasized British accent/falsetto and BAM! You have a tune that gets the blood pumping and keeps the booze flowing.

“Mr. Mcgee”

Zero 7

With the second track off their fourth studio album, Yeah Ghost, Zero 7 has done it again. What have they done exactly? Kept us on our toes! What has been described as “acid jazz” and “down tempo,” Zero 7 has once again changed the attack method to our eardrums. This Grammy nominated duo has been jamming for over a decade. Keep the surprises coming, Zero 7, please!

“Dusk Till Dawn” (Pablo Decoder Remix)

Ladyhawke

“Dusk Till Dawn” has been on my top 10 electro songs for a while, and when I heard Pablo Decoder’s remix, I went to bass beat heaven. This UK producer is not only talented, but brutal with his bass lines and breaks. The tempo is infectiously addictive and with the guitar sampling at 4:21 all I want to do is bang, bang, bang from dusk till…well, as long as humanly possible.

“Use Somebody” (Chew Fu Festival Fix)

Kings of Leon

I was recently at a rave in Coney Island—yes they still exist—and the DJ threw this jam down. I have been a huge fan of Kings of Leon since “Sex On Fire” was released and Chew Fu causes a stirring in my loins on a regular basis. When I heard the two of them together, I knew that the world must know about this amazing love child. I continue to be astonished at the merging of two completely separate genres and applaud both artists.

“Feel It In My Bones” (Feat. Tegan and Sara)

Tiesto

With Bieber fever hitting ungodly heights, I feel as though we have forgotten who really brought the dyke haircut into the mainstream: Tegan and Sara. These lesbian sisters are not only Canadian, they are talented. When you pair that with Grammy nominated Tiësto it can only get better. This track has all the key elements of modern trance with just enough gayness and pop to keep that foot tapping and those bangs shaking.

“Airplanes” (Rodway Remix)

B.o.B. feat. Haley Williams

If there is one thing I like better then dancing on a box, it is dancing on a box with filthy bass beats ringing high in my cerebellum. Every radio station has been playing this song without restraint, so it was my goal to find something different but that kept the unique vocals of Hayley Williams. I found it in Rodway’s remix. I was utterly flabbergasted when I learned the producer was only 18 and mastered his skills in Colorado! How could I ask for more? How could you?

“Prisoner” (Morgan Page Radio Edit)

Jeffree Starr

It would be utterly silly if I tried to say I don’t love a good ol’ tranny. Who doesn’t? But I couldn’t even entertain the idea of disliking such a crude and tattooed tranny like Jeffree Starr. Whether touring at Warped Tour or collaborating with Hollywood Undead, this girl holds her own—and I’m sure it is a two-hand job. Now put this train wreck together with Morgan Page and what is the outcome? Utter bliss! The lyrics are creepy and beg for a restraining order. Mash that with the pops and clicks that Page brings to the picture and my little gay heart can only scream, “Yay!” and beg for such a stalker.

“Le Disko” (Ianizer & Lemethy Twonk Remix)

Shiny Toy Guns

Shiny Toy Guns have been around the block a few years and with DJ Jeremy Dawson behind their keyboard, it’s a recipe for utter ecstasy. Ianizer & Lementhy are a Swedish duo who not only produce their own music but their own unique twist when working on a remix. As a die-hard Shiny Toy Guns fan, I approve this message—I mean song!

“Dr. Love”

The Bumblebeez

Australian, brother-sister duo The Bumblebeez have some serious pizzazz and “Dr. Love” is just a serious good time for 4:14 minutes. I personally enjoy the keyboard tattooed on the old Asian man’s chest.

“Mowgli’s Road” (The Knocks Remix)

Marina & the Diamonds

Marina is one of the best things I brought back with me from Colorado. When my two worlds collided and I realized that Brooklyn-based production duo The Knocks had their own take on this Greek artist, I was more antsy than an unneutered Jack Russell Terrier seeing this hot bitch for the first time in weeks. I devoured it. Note: I do always say “Y-E-S.”

There they are, the 10 songs to keep your dancing shoes (and more importantly your man/men) hot and bothered! Listen, devour, download, and share the wealth!

P.S. Halloween is around the corner, keep an eye out for a playlist full of utter spooks and shrieks. And no, I am not talking about Miley Cirus’s newest tragic album!
