M@ty Slick's Call to Action

M@TY SLICK is sick of hearing the same thing on every dance floor in the city. Get ready to learn what you should be listening to.

Ok boys, something has come to my attention, and in my opinion, action must be taken! There is some horror coursing through the veins of many clubs, bars and iPods throughout gay New York. It is mind numbing, pulsing and contagious. We have all heard it, seen it in action and, frankly, I am sick of it. What is this monster I speak of? The same music in every bar, in every club, night after night after night. Something needs to be done.

That’s where I come into play. I am going to tell you about the music you should be listening to.

Now don’t get me wrong; I would be a liar if I said I didn’t enjoy a little “Teenage Dream” or, of course, pop music’s current saving grace, the one and only Lady Gaga. But over the past months, I have heard some amazing tunes that not only keep you moving but also dip into a vast majority of genres untouched by the gays of New York.

Let’s get started. Here’s a playlist of 10 songs that have the rhythm, the beat and the rawness to keep the poppers popping and bottoms bucking! Here we go (follow the hyperlinks to hear the songs):

“Hand Me Down Your Love”

Hot Chip

From their fourth studio album, One Life Stand, Hot Chip continue to bring a different vibe to the electro scene. Hailing from England, their vocals are nothing but on point. And come on; who doesn’t like the sound of a British accent?

“Pump My Pumps”

Dan Black

Have you heard of Dan Black? Well, you should have. His collaboration with wonder producer/DJ Kid Cudi on his first single “Symphonies” scored this man a nomination for Best New Artist at the NewNowNext awards on Logo this past spring. “Pump My Pumps” not only has some pulse, it’s a song completely about pumping. Pumping what? I’ll leave that up to you.

“New In Town”

Little Boots

Another NewNowNext nominee, Little Boots is starting to make a ripple in the US from all the way across the pond. From her YouTube videos of her messing with a mini MIDI controller to the video for “New In Town” (it has dancing homeless people, gang fights and simulated sex in cars; can we ask for more? I think not.) Little Boots seems like she may be a British force to be reckoned with.

“Whole New Way”

Scissor Sisters

Well, any gay that didn’t get lost in the Meat Rack all summer has to have heard about the Scissor Sisters’ new album Night Work. True to their form, is has all the disco and glitz your little twitterpated heart could ask for. Now, “Whole New Way” is on this list, well, because it’s all about anal.

“Raindrops” (Doorly Remix)

Basement Jaxx

This is a song that you just cannot go wrong with. The British-duo Basement Jaxx and the god that is Doorly. The man shreds three CDJs at a time and throws down dirty beats while effortlessly going between genres. It is a must hear!

“Gutter”

Paper Route

Hailing from Nashville, Paper Route is a band that infuses rock with some mean synths. The vocals are clean and pure, perfectly contrasting that awesome bass line that’s addictive from the first beat.

“Love Lockdown” (SEXISTALK Remix)

Kayne West

I know, I know, you’re all thinking, “Umm, I have heard this song one too many times.” But trust me on this. SEXISTALK brushes the dust off this dance floor standard and adds something I promise you haven’t heard before. Give it a listen. You know you want to.

“Fire In Your New Shoes”

Kaskade

Kaskade has been rocking the decks for a while now. “Fire In Your New Shoes” does exactly that: it sets your feet on fire with the need to dance just a little bit harder. The man has my respect along with the one and only Deadmau5, and who can forget his stellar remix of Gaga’s “Bad Romance?”

“Low Life” (L.A. Riots Remix, feat. Uffie, With Scanners)

Steve Aoki

Steve Aoki does dirty things to you. Amazing dirty, filthy things. That is all.

“Who Wants To Be Alone” (feat. Nelly Furtado)

Tiesto

Tiesto is probably the only thing the cast of the Jersey Shore and the gays of New York might be able to agree on. When you add Nelly Furtado to the mix it’s almost euphoric. And really, who ever wants to go home before the sun comes up?

That’s this week’s list kiddos! A little taste of what is still to come. Give all these tracks a listen. What do you have to lose? It can’t be more harmful than hearing Ke$ha skwak about glitter, vomit and booze for the thirtieth time this week.
