DJ Sparber's Twerk Ethic
Talking music, blogging and general gayness with DJ Josh Sparber
By Matty Slick-Haxx
I had the privilege of running into the extremely talented DJ Josh Sparber at the most recent Spank loft party, and could hardly contain myself! I didn’t know what to do: dive head first into his armpit or drop to my knees—such a choice! Ultimately, I ended up making small talk, letting my imagination run wild as we chatted. Now, if you’re unaware of who Sparber is, you must have been living under a rock for some time now. Whether he’s keeping the East Village boys jiving, relentlessly updating his blog, or talking shop with equally talented music folk on his podcast, Sparber just doesn’t stop. I got to pick his brain for a hot minute and after trying to read through the drool spots on my notebook, this is what I got for the children.
AntiTwink.com: What can we expect from you this summer?
Josh Sparber: So far, I'm DJing up in Boston and out on Fire Island in May as well as kicking off a new Sunday rooftop thing at the Gansevoort Hotel. I'll also be holding it down at my weekly Wednesday party, Good Times at EasternBloc all summer, and hopefully making it over to Europe to DJ a few parties in London and Berlin—and any other city that wants me.
I'm in love with your podcast! Tell me a little more about it, as well as your blog.
The podcast grew out of my rejected application for a show on East Village Radio. I'm always talking music with DJ and musician friends so I figured why not record it? It was easy enough to set up a digital recording spot in my apartment and invite over local talents for a back-and-forth about our influences and current music preferences. You can grab the podcast for free on iTunes if you search "Sparber." It's also linked on my blog, twerking.com, which is nearing its fifth year of party pics, commentaries and random music and eBay auctions I find interesting.
What is your favorite music blog?
Discobelle.net
The Pines or Cherry Grove?
I really can't choose. I've DJ’d both and love the laid back, anything-goes vibe of Cherry Grove, though it can't compete with the lights, sound system and packed-out crowd of High Tea in The Pines.
If you could redo the soundtrack to one ’80s movie with current tunes, what film would it be?
Maybe Teen Witch, though its soundtrack is pretty flawless as-is.
Gay Pride is right around the corner. How do you usually celebrate? What are you looking forward to most?
My friend Mikey does an annual party at his apartment on Fifth Avenue, which overlooks the parade, so we always go there and pump a Kylie Minogue soundtrack to the passing paraders. I am really looking forward to the gay blogger marching contingent. They need to upgrade to their own float this year.
Best underground party currently in rotation? Or, where can we rub down that gorgeous chest of yours?
Apart from my Wednesday spot at EasternBloc—which is at a gay bar, so I'm not sure it counts for underground—I'd say the Spank loft parties are as good as it gets for underground dance parties.
Best new emerging DJ? Who should be looking out for?
In New York City, or in general? In New York City, I'm really into DJ Dandy Lion, who isn't new, but hasn't done much in New York since he moved here from San Francisco. He has a tech house sound that's harder to find in North America. In general, I'm really feeling Gesaffelstein.
Favorite Disney princess?
Jasmine from Aladdin.
