Amanda Lepore Tours the Limelight Mall

Amanda Lepore, Limelight, Limelight Marketplace, New York, nightlife, nightclub, club kid, transexual

We can't bring ourselves to set foot in the Limelight Marketplace, the new mini-mall that's taken over the legendary nightclub, but if reports we're hearing from friends are true, it's just as depressing as we predicted. Amanda Lepore, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have a problem with it. The world's number one transexual toured the newest incarnation of her former haunt with the New York Post:

"As a salesperson rubbed the gold-flecked cream onto the back of Lepore’s alabaster hand — (“Your skin is so soft!” she cooed) — Lepore cased out the renovated club space for the first time.

She pointed out the old deejay booth, where Polo shirts now hang, and the former VIP lounge — now a chocolate store. This is the spot where Michael Alig, the infamous Club Kid who hosted parties at the Limelight until 1996 when he murdered his drug dealer, once built a life-size house of cards complete with secret stairwells.

'It fell down, as you would expect,' says Lepore with a giggle."

There's something odd, appropriately poetic in the fact that Amanda isn't bemoaning the Limelight's repurposing. She's embraced the change, which should come as no surpise given that this is a woman who's life and career have been built around the radical repurposing and constant reinvention of her own body. Maybe that's a lesson we could all stand to learn.
